Each year in the Chinese calendar is represented by one of 12 animals. Your sign is determined by the zodiac year you were born in.
The zodiac year begins at 立春 (Start of Spring, ~Feb 4), not Lunar New Year. If you were born before 立春, your sign belongs to the previous year. This is the standard for BaZi and Chinese astrology.
Beyond the animal sign, each year also carries one of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) from the sexagenary cycle.
Chinese astrology is based on Beijing time (UTC+8). If you were born outside China, especially near the 立春 boundary (Feb 3–5) or near midnight, convert your birth time to Beijing time for maximum accuracy.
Example: Born at 8 PM on Feb 4 in New York (EST, UTC−5) = 9 AM on Feb 5 in Beijing time. This could change your zodiac sign if Feb 5 is past 立春.
A common misconception is that the zodiac year changes at Lunar New Year (春节). In fact, for Chinese astrology and BaZi (八字), the year changes at 立春 (Start of Spring) — one of the 24 solar terms, falling on or around February 4. Lunar New Year can fall anywhere from late January to mid-February, creating a gap where the two systems disagree. For fortune-telling, BaZi, and Tai Sui calculations, 立春 is always the correct boundary.
